July is here and as we celebrate with barbecues and fireworks, the MLB season rolls on with the All-Star break less than two weeks away. Even though the Dodgers are rolling, FOX Sports MLB analyst Ben Verlander focused on L.A.’s weak spots in the latest edition of his power rankings. “Does Shohei Ohtani love hitting leadoff or what? Over the past two weeks, Ohtani has eight home runs, a 1.583 OPS, 17 RBIs and one near-death experience with a foul ball,” Verlander exclaimed before adding, “The rest of the Dodgers remain a mixed bag.” “Gavin Stone threw a masterful shutout against the White Sox, but Bobby Miller still does not look right since coming off the injured list with a shoulder issue. Even would-be ace Tyler Glasnow struggled this week. And the back half of L.A.’s lineup remains a massive issue as we head into trade season.”

The Houston Astros moved to +1700 from +2200 in the past week, thanks to a torrid hot streak. “[The Astros] won nine of their past 10, including series wins over the Orioles and Mets,” Verlander wrote. “Not only are the Astros back above .500, but the ageless José Altuve has his batting average back above .300 on the season, and Yordan Álvarez and Jeremy Peña are raking as well. Just wait until Kyle Tucker, who still leads the team in wins above replacement this season, returns from his leg injury.”

The team with the most positive movement over the week was none other than the New York Mets, whose odds shortened to +7500 from +11000 thanks, in part, to last week’s sweep of the New York Yankees in the Subway Series. FOX Sports MLB writer Deesha Thosar explained that the Mets’ spark plug has been the play of catcher Francisco Álvarez. “Since the back end of a doubleheader on April 4, New York is 23-4 with Álvarez and 17-32 without him,” she wrote. “For the season, its pitching staff has a 2.97 ERA when Álvarez is catching and a 4.72 ERA when he’s not. The heartbeat of the Mets might just be a fearless 22-year-old catcher playing baseball with unabashed aplomb.”
