The Open 2024: Shane Lowry Leads as Tiger Woods Exits Royal Troon
Shane Lowry managed to birdie the final hole to secure the clubhouse lead at seven under on the second day of the Open Championship at Royal Troon. Despite the challenging conditions with strong winds, the Irishman was able to shoot a two-under 69 to follow his opening round of 66. Lowry expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that shooting in the 60s on this course is quite an achievement, especially with the tough conditions.
Currently, Lowry leads by two strokes from England’s Dan Brown, who had an impressive six-under-par first round and followed it up with a solid 72 on Friday. World number one Scottie Scheffler, along with American Billy Horschel and South African Dean Burmester, are tied at two under after the second round.
Legendary golfer Tiger Woods, who has been struggling with injuries and form, finished with a six-over 77, leaving him at 14 over for the tournament. Despite his recent struggles, Woods confirmed that he plans to be at Portrush for next year’s Championship.
On the course, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, England’s Justin Rose, and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy are among the later starters. McIlroy, the 2019 champion, had a strong front nine, reaching seven under at the turn before facing challenges on the back nine.
Lowry faced some adversity during his round, including a double-bogey on the 11th hole, but managed to finish with birdies on the 16th and 18th to set a challenging target for the field. Meanwhile, Brown, playing in his first Open, showed resilience by fighting back from a slow start to stay in contention.
