USA Track and Field will be integrating the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field program into its operations starting January 1st. This move is part of a collaboration aimed at bringing all athletes under one umbrella.
The decision to bring the Para track program in-house follows the outstanding performance of American athletes at the Paris Games. While U.S. track and field athletes secured 34 medals, including 14 gold, the U.S. track and field Paralympians achieved 38 medals, with 10 gold medals.
By taking over the Para track program from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), USA Track and Field is ensuring that Para track and field athletes will receive the same level of support and development as their able-bodied counterparts.
USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating that it will provide Para athletes with unparalleled access to resources, support, and training to help them excel and proudly represent Team USA.
This move makes USA Track and Field the 17th national governing body to integrate its Paralympic program. The decision mirrors similar actions taken by other organizations, such as U.S. Ski & Snowboard, which incorporated the U.S. Para Alpine Ski Team and U.S. Para Snowboard Team into its structure to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities in winter sports.
Max Siegel, CEO of USATF, emphasized the organization’s commitment to inclusivity and comprehensive support. By uniting the Olympic and Paralympic programs, USATF aims to set a new standard for integrated sports programs, with the belief that a unified team will lead to success both on and off the field.
Paralympic gold medalist Hunter Woodhall, who triumphed in the T62 400 meters at the Paris Games, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. Woodhall highlighted the significance of the investment, dedication, and bright future that the collaboration promises for the entire Para track and field community.
The integration of the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field program into USA Track and Field marks a significant milestone for the sport. This strategic move not only underscores the commitment to supporting athletes of all abilities but also sets the stage for enhanced opportunities and success in the world of track and field. With a unified approach, the future looks promising for both able-bodied and Para track and field athletes as they strive for excellence and unity in representing Team USA.
