With the 2024 NBA Draft now behind us, the focus has shifted to predicting the Rookie of the Year winner. The top picks include Zaccharie Risacher going to the Hawks, Alexandre Sarr to the Wizards, and Reed Sheppard to the Rockets. However, there were some surprises on draft day, like Zach Edey sneaking into the top 10 and being selected by the Memphis Grizzlies.
When it comes to the odds of winning the Rookie of the Year award, Alexandre Sarr opened as the favorite at +350. Other contenders include Risacher, Stephon Castle, Edey, Tidjane Salaun, Reed Sheppard, Donovan Clingan, Dalton Knecht, Cody Williams, Ronald Holland, and Rob Dillingham. Notably, Bronny James, son of LeBron James, was selected by the Lakers and initially had odds of +30000.
Despite his late draft selection, Bronny James has faced criticism for not developing his skills further before joining the NBA. Many believe he would benefit from more time in college to hone his abilities. As for Zach Edey, he started with odds of +2500 but quickly rose to +1100 due to significant betting action in his favor.
In an interview with FOX Sports, Purdue head coach Matt Painter praised Edey’s work ethic and ability to improve rapidly. He highlighted Edey’s dedication to refining his skills, especially in areas where he was initially perceived to be lacking. This commitment to growth has made Edey a top contender for the Rookie of the Year title.
