An investigation has been launched in Kenya to look into the conduct of the police during recent protests against the government’s new tax plan. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority in Kenya commended the protesters for demonstrating peacefully and called on the police to show restraint. Unfortunately, one protester was killed and many others, including police officers, were injured during the protests.

The mother of the young man who was shot and killed, Rex, shared a heartbreaking account of how her son was coming home from work when the incident occurred. Tear gas was thrown, and the police fired at the fleeing protesters, leading to tragic consequences. The Kenya Red Cross Society reported that 39 people were injured, with 8 in critical condition. A coalition of organizations stated that at least 200 people were injured during the protests, emphasizing that the use of live bullets against protesters is both disproportionate and unlawful.

Despite calls for an investigation into police violence during the protests, the police have not yet commented on the incidents. However, the Inspector General mentioned that demonstrators should not try to occupy important government buildings. Those who attempted to access the parliament buildings where the finance bill was being debated faced a harsh response from the police, including water cannons, tear gas, and rubber or live bullets.

The finance bill, which includes new taxes on medical insurance, vegetable oil, and fuel, has passed the second reading, with a final vote expected soon. Some contested proposals, such as a value-added tax on bread and an eco-levy on goods like sanitary towels and diapers, have been amended by the government. It is clear that the protests were a result of the frustration and anger over these new taxes that would burden the Kenyan people.

The incidents during the protests have sparked a national conversation about police conduct and the right to peaceful protest. It is essential for authorities to address the concerns raised by the public and ensure that such tragic events do not happen again in the future. As the investigation progresses, it will be crucial to hold those responsible for any misconduct or violence accountable. Peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental right in any democratic society, and it is the duty of the police to protect and respect that right.
