The Dallas Cowboys recently made a contract agreement with cornerback Gareon Conley, a former first-round NFL draft pick who most recently played for the UFL’s DC Defenders. Conley, who was originally selected by the Oakland Raiders as the No. 17 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, had a promising start to his career but has faced some setbacks due to injuries and trades.
During his rookie season, Conley only played two games before suffering a shin injury. However, he bounced back in 2018, playing 15 games, starting 14, and putting up impressive stats including 37 tackles, 15 passes defended, and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Despite his success, the Raiders traded Conley to the Houston Texans in 2019.
Unfortunately, Conley’s time with the Texans was also marred by injuries, as he was placed on the reserve/injured list in 2020 due to an ankle injury, causing him to miss the entire season. After his contract with Houston expired, Conley joined the UFL’s DC Defenders where he played seven games, showcasing his skills with 25 tackles, two interceptions, and five pass breakups.
Recently, Conley had a successful workout with the Cowboys, leading to his signing with the team. This opportunity gives Conley a second chance in the NFL after a four-year absence. It’s worth noting that Conley already has a connection in Dallas, as his former Raiders defensive coordinator, Paul Guenther, is now serving as the Cowboys’ defensive run game coordinator.
In addition to Conley, the Cowboys also signed linebacker Willie Harvey Jr., who was the UFL’s leading tackler last season. This move not only strengthens the Cowboys’ defense but also adds depth and experience to the team. As Conley and Harvey Jr. join the Cowboys, fans can look forward to seeing how these new additions will contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
