Donovan Mitchell, a talented player who has been named an All-Star five times, has recently agreed to a lucrative contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. According to ESPN, the extension is worth $150.3 million over three years, and it includes a player option for the 2027-28 NBA season.
Prior to this extension, Mitchell was close to the end of a five-year, $195 million deal. As part of that contract, the 27-year-old guard had a player option for the 2025-26 season. The Cavaliers had a successful season, finishing with a 48-34 record and securing the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference for the second year in a row. They advanced to the semifinals but were eliminated by the eventual NBA champions, the Boston Celtics, in five games. Mitchell was sidelined for the final two games of the series due to a calf injury.
During his second season with the Cavaliers, Mitchell showcased his skills by averaging 26.6 points, 6.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. He also had impressive shooting percentages of 46.2% from the field, 36.8% from three-point range, and 86.5% from the free-throw line.
Following the end of the season, the Cavaliers made some changes to their coaching staff. They parted ways with head coach J.B. Bickerstaff after his four-plus seasons with the team and brought in Kenny Atkinson, a former assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
Mitchell’s journey to Cleveland began with a blockbuster trade in 2022, where the Cavaliers acquired him from the Utah Jazz. He had spent the first five seasons of his NBA career with the Jazz. The trade involved three future first-round draft picks and also included the talented forward Lauri Markkanen, who went on to become an NBA All-Star in the 2022-23 season.
This extension solidifies Mitchell’s future with the Cavaliers and demonstrates the team’s commitment to building a competitive roster. With Mitchell’s talent and leadership on the court, the Cavaliers will look to make a strong push in the upcoming seasons and compete for an NBA championship.
