When the New York Jets kick off their training camp, Haason Reddick, a seasoned pass rusher, won’t be in attendance. Reddick has decided to hold out in order to negotiate a new contract, reports CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones. For each day he misses, Reddick will face $50,000 in fines. At 29 years old, Reddick was recently acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional third-round pick that could potentially become a second-rounder based on his performance.
Heading into the final year of his current contract, Reddick is slated to earn a base salary of $14.25 million along with a $250,000 workout bonus and an additional $500,000 bonus. In 2022, he inked a three-year, $45 million deal with the Eagles. His current deal’s $15 million average annual value ranks 19th among edge rushers in the league, per Over the Cap.
Reports from SNY indicate that the Jets presented Reddick with a raise offer before finalizing the trade, but he turned it down, seeking a higher figure. The Jets expressed a need to see him in action first. Although Reddick initially agreed, he was absent from OTAs, minicamp, and now training camp. The Jets have made it clear that they will not engage in negotiations until Reddick returns.
In his two-year stint with Philadelphia, Reddick earned two Pro Bowl selections and one All-Pro Second Team nod. Following a remarkable 16-sack season in 2022, he secured 11 more sacks in 2023, finishing fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Since transitioning to the edge full time in 2020, Reddick has consistently recorded at least 11 sacks per season.
The Jets recruited Reddick after Bryce Huff, a rotational edge rusher in New York, departed for Philadelphia in free agency. Once Reddick rejoins the team, he is expected to lead the edge rushers, a group that includes Jermaine Johnson II, Will McDonald IV, Micheal Clemons, and Takk McKinley. The Jets are eager to see how Reddick’s return will impact the team’s defensive performance in the upcoming season.
