A teenager in Hawaii recently found himself in a harrowing situation after spending more than 11 hours clinging to a kayak before being rescued during an overnight ocean search by an off-duty lifeguard and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Kahiau Kawai, a 17-year-old, had become separated from his high school paddling team on Wednesday after his kayak capsized about half a mile south of Honolulu’s Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort. Notably, he was not wearing a life jacket at the time, making his situation even more precarious.
Fortunately, thanks to the diligent efforts of state, city, and federal rescue teams, as well as the unwavering determination of an off-duty Honolulu lifeguard who took it upon himself to search for the missing teen, Kawai was finally located and rescued. His parents expressed their gratitude for everyone involved in the search and rescue operation, emphasizing their son’s strength, resilience, and bravery during the ordeal.
Kamehameha Schools, where Kawai is a student, reported him missing during kayaking practice, prompting an extensive search effort. Ultimately, a Coast Guard airplane crew spotted the kayak with the teen clinging to it and quickly directed the off-duty lifeguard, Noland Keaulana, to the location using a flare.
Keaulana, a Polynesian voyager from a well-known Native Hawaiian waterman family, recounted his emotional response upon finding Kawai safe and sound. Despite expecting the worst, seeing the teenager unharmed brought a wave of relief and gratitude. Kawai was treated for injuries and hypothermia before being transported to an emergency room for further evaluation. Currently, he is in serious but stable condition, recovering with the support of his family and friends.
This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety practices and the incredible dedication of first responders and community members who go above and beyond to ensure the well-being of others. It also highlights the resilience and courage displayed by individuals in the face of adversity, inspiring us all to stay strong in challenging circumstances.
