Sha’Carri Richardson, the reigning 100-meter world champion, has secured her spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics after winning the 100m race at the US Trials. The 24-year-old American sprinter clocked an impressive time of 10.71 seconds to claim victory and qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.
Richardson’s journey to the Olympics was not without its challenges. At the trials in Eugene, Oregon, she faced a stumble at the block in the opening race and even ran the final 20 meters with an untied shoe. Despite these obstacles, she managed to finish first in the opening race with a time of 10.88 seconds and followed it up with a semifinal time of 10.86 seconds to secure her spot in the final.
This achievement comes after a historic year for Richardson, where she set a blistering pace of 10.65 seconds in Budapest, Hungary, last August, making it the fastest 100-meter sprint ever recorded at the World Athletics Championships. Her performance tied for the fifth-fastest of all time, just 0.16 seconds behind the world record set by American sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.
In addition to her success in the 100m race, Richardson also earned silver in the 200m race and anchored the American 4×100 relay team to another gold at the World Championships. Her stellar performances have solidified her reputation as one of the top sprinters in the world.
Having turned professional in 2019 after a season at Louisiana State, Richardson will now represent Team USA at the Paris Olympics, marking her first appearance at the prestigious event.
