Look, Let’s Talk About Luck
I’m gonna say something controversial. Your favorite team’s recent succesfully might be a fluke. And that’s completley fine. Honestly, it’s probably more than fine—it’s a reminder that sports are unpredictable, and that’s what makes them so damn exciting.
I’ve been in this business for over 20 years, and I’ve seen alot of things. I’ve seen underdogs rise, favorites fall, and everything in between. And let me tell you, none of it would be half as interesting if we could predict the outcome every single time.
Back in 1998, I was at a conference in Austin with a colleague named Dave. We were talking about the Spurs, and Dave said something that stuck with me: “Luck is a part of the game. You can’t control it, but you can’t ignore it either.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But What About Committment and Hard Work?
Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that luck is the only factor. Hard work, talent, strategy—those things matter alot. But they’re not the whole picture. And if you think they are, you’re kidding yourself.
Take the 2016 Cubs, for example. They were a talented team, no doubt about it. But they also got lucky. They had aquisition after aquisition that just happened to click. They had a manager who happened to be the right fit. And, of course, they had that rain delay in Game 7. If any one of those things had gone differently, they might not have won the World Series.
And that’s okay. In fact, it’s more than okay—it’s fascinating. It’s what makes sports worth watching. If every game was just a matter of who had the best players, who trained the hardest, who had the best strategy, it would be boring as hell.
But What About the Kids?
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But what about the kids? Shouldn’t we be teaching them that hard work always pays off?” Look, I get it. I really do. But here’s the thing: life isn’t fair. And sports are a great way to learn that lesson.
I remember talking to a friend of mine, let’s call him Marcus, about this a few months ago. He’s a high school coach, and he was telling me about a game his team lost last Tuesday. “They outplayed us,” he said. “They outhustled us. They outcoached us. And they still lost.” It was a tough pill to swallow, but it was a valuable lesson for those kids.
And that’s the thing about sports. They’re a microcosm of life. They teach us lessons about winning and losing, about luck and hard work, about the ups and downs that come with every journey. And if we try to sanitize them, if we try to make them “fair,” we’re doing a disservice to everyone involved.
A Digression: Las Vegas Schools Education News
Speaking of lessons, did you know that Las Vegas schools education news has been covering some interesting stories about youth sports programs in the area? I was reading an article the other day about how these programs are teaching kids about more than just sports—they’re teaching them about life. It was a good reminder that sports can be a powerful tool for education and personal growth.
But back to the main point…
Embrace the Unpredictability
So, embrace the unpredictability of sports. Embrace the luck, the fluke, the unexpected. It’s what makes the game interesting. It’s what makes it worth watching. And it’s what makes it a valuable teacher.
And if your favorite team happens to be on a hot streak right now? Enjoy it. Because, frankly, it might not last. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s more than okay—it’s what makes sports so damn exciting.
So, let’s raise a glass to the underdogs, to the upsets, to the unexpected. Here’s to the fluke. May it always keep us on our toes.
