UNLV Quarterback Matthew Sluka Decides to Enter Transfer Portal Amid Unfulfilled Commitments
UNLV starting quarterback, Matthew Sluka, has announced his decision to step away from the Rebels program and redshirt with plans to enter the transfer portal. This news came late Tuesday via social media, where Sluka cited “certain representations” made by the school when he transferred from Holy Cross this offseason as the reason for his departure.
In his statement, Sluka explained, “I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in any additional games this season. I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”
In response to Sluka’s announcement, Blueprint Sports, the company responsible for UNLV’s NIL collective, issued a statement clarifying that no formal monetary offers were made during his recruitment process. The statement read, “We want to address the recent developments surrounding Matthew Sluka and his decision to redshirt for the remainder of the year. To clarify, there were no formal NIL offers made during Mr. Sluka’s recruitment process.”
UNLV also released a statement on Wednesday afternoon, alleging that demands from Sluka’s camp violated NCAA pay-for-play rules. The statement read, “Football player Matthew Sluka’s representative made financial demands upon the university and its NIL collective in order to continue playing. UNLV Athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law.”
With Sluka’s departure, UNLV will be turning to either Hajj-Malik Williams or Cameron Friel as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. Williams, a transfer from Campbell, and Friel, who has been with the program since 2021, will now have the opportunity to lead the Rebels on the field.
Despite the unexpected turn of events, UNLV remains optimistic about its season. The Rebels are off to a strong 3-0 start under Sluka’s leadership, with impressive wins over Kansas and Houston. The team is considered a top contender for the Group of Five bid to the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.
