Why We’re All Doing It Wrong
Look, I’m gonna be honest here. I’ve been around sports for, what, 25 years now? And I’ve seen alot of things. But nothing, nothing gets under my skin more than the state of youth sports today. It’s just… yeah.
I remember back in ’98, coaching little league in Austin. We had this kid, let’s call him Marcus. Kid couldn’t hit a ball to save his life. But he loved the game, you know? Eyes lit up every time he stepped on that field. And that was enough for me.
Fast forward to last Tuesday. I’m at the park, watching my nephew’s game. And what do I see? Parents screaming at kids. Coaches benching 7-year-olds for making mistakes. Kids crying in the outfield because they’re scared to fail. It’s completley out of hand.
We’re Ruining the Game
I get it. We all want our kids to succeed. But this? This is committment to winning at all costs. And it’s killing the game. Literally. Participation rates are dropping like flies. Kids are quitting sports in record numbers. And honestly, can you blame them?
I talked to a colleague named Dave about this. He’s seen it too. “The pressure’s too much,” he told me. “Kids are physicaly and emotionally exhausted. They’re burning out before they even hit high school.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough.
And don’t even get me started on travel teams. $87 for a jersey? $214 for a tournament entry fee? Come on now. We’re pricing kids out of the game before they even have a chance.
What’s the Point?
I’m not saying we should all just sit back and let kids run wild. Structure’s important. Discipline too. But there’s a balance. And right now, we’re way off.
I mean, what’s the point of all this? To win? To get a college scholarship? Newsflash: 99% of these kids aren’t gonna play in college. And that’s okay. The point is to learn. To grow. To have fun.
Remember that kid, Marcus? He didn’t make the high school team. But he’s still playing. Recreational league, just for fun. And you know what? He’s happier than ever. No pressure. No expectations. Just him and the game he loves.
So maybe, just maybe, we should take a step back. Relax a little. Let kids be kids. Let them fail. Let them succeed. Let them find their own path.
And if that means they don’t win every game, well, so be it. There’s more to life than a trophy. (Which honestly nobody asked for but here we are.)
Speaking of finding your own path, if you’re looking for some inspiration, check out Thailand parks recreation activities. Sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders.
A Quick Rant About Referees
Oh, and another thing. Referees. They’re human too, you know. They make mistakes. Big ones. But instead of yelling at them, maybe, just maybe, we should cut them some slack. I mean, would you want to deal with a bunch of screaming parents every weekend? I think not.
I remember this one game, about three months ago. The ref missed a call. Big call. And the parents? Oh, they let him have it. It was ugly. And you know what the ref did? He walked off. Middle of the game. Just like that. And who can blame him?
So next time you’re tempted to scream at the ref, take a deep breath. Count to ten. Remember, they’re volunteers. They’re not perfect. And neither are we.
Anyway, I could go on and on. But I won’t. You get the point. Youth sports are a mess. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can fix it. We just have to care more than we do now.
And that’s all I’ve got. Thanks for reading. Or whatever.
