Steve Cooper is currently in discussions to potentially become the next manager of Leicester. The 44-year-old has been without a job since he was fired by Nottingham Forest in December. Despite initial talks with Graham Potter and Carlos Corberan, it seems Cooper is now the front runner for the position.
Leicester had previously tried to lure Potter to the King Power Stadium last April, but he was not interested in returning to management so soon after being let go by Chelsea. The Foxes, who won the Championship last season, are gearing up to face Tottenham in their first match of the upcoming season.
The search for a new manager began after Enzo Maresca left for Chelsea earlier in the month. Maresca departed after just one season, following the club’s promotion back to the Premier League. His exit did bring in around £10m in compensation, which will help the club deal with profit and sustainability regulations.
There is a cloud of uncertainty hanging over Leicester as they could potentially face a points deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules. The club was charged in March and must ensure compliance by the end of June to avoid further punishment.
Steve Cooper has an impressive track record, having led England’s Under-17 team to a World Cup victory in 2017. He also had stints at Swansea and Nottingham Forest, where he successfully guided the latter back to the Premier League after a 23-year absence. Despite leaving Forest mid-season, Cooper’s experience and success make him a strong candidate for the Leicester job.
