A quarterback debate might be brewing in Pittsburgh, but the betting odds suggest otherwise. All signs indicate that Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback for the Steelers in Week 1. Wilson signed a one-year deal with the team in March, following his release from the Denver Broncos. Not long after, Pittsburgh acquired former Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields.
According to the odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, Wilson is heavily favored to start in Week 1:
PITTSBURGH STEELERS WEEK 1 STARTING QUARTERBACK:
– Russell Wilson: -620 (bet $10 to win $11.61 total)
– Justin Fields: +400 (bet $10 to win $50 total)
Despite Wilson’s strong position as the favorite, Fields has seen his odds improve from +450 to +400 over the past week. This shift could be linked to Wilson’s calf injury, which caused him to miss practice recently. Wilson mentioned, “We were doing a sled push thing and just tweaked it a little bit. Just working hard and sometimes things happen. Good news is that I feel good, and we’ll get there in time.”
During Wilson’s absence, Fields has impressed during practice, particularly with his deep passes to Calvin Austin and George Pickens. When it comes to experience, Wilson, 35, has a significant edge with 188 career starts compared to Fields’ 38 starts at the age of 25.
FanDuel also offers odds on Wilson’s performance for the upcoming season, with +160 for throwing 3,500 yards or more and +175 for throwing 25 or more touchdowns.
The question remains whether Fields’ strong showing in training camp will be sufficient to secure the starting position. Stay updated with FOX Sports for the latest news on the NFL and more. Follow your favorite teams to receive updates on games, news, and more.
