NFL quarterback Kirk Cousins signed a lucrative four-year, $180 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons in March. Shortly after, the team surprised many by drafting Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While this move raised eyebrows, Cousins is no stranger to quarterback competition in the locker room.

During a recent episode of the “All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson” podcast, NFL Insider Dianna Russini shared insights into how the 35-year-old Cousins is preparing for the upcoming season. She mentioned that Cousins has evolved since his earlier years in the league and is approaching the competition with a newfound edge.

Falcons’ team owner Arthur Blank confirmed that Cousins was aware the team might draft a quarterback in the 2024 Draft, but the specific pick of Penix was a surprise. Despite this, Cousins remains the franchise and starting quarterback. He has faced similar situations before, such as in 2012 with Robert Griffin III and during his college days at Michigan State when Nick Foles was offered a scholarship shortly after Cousins committed.

Cousins joined the Falcons after a successful stint with the Minnesota Vikings from 2018 to 2023. Despite a setback with a torn Achilles last October, the four-time Pro Bowler has been cleared for training camp in July. Russini believes that Cousins’ past experiences and resilience will drive him forward as he embraces this new chapter in Atlanta.

The Falcons are set to begin their regular season on Sept. 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cousins will lead the team in this game, showcasing his determination and skill on the field. As he navigates this latest challenge, Cousins’ journey through adversity and competition will serve as a source of motivation and strength.
