After a disappointing end to the 2023 season, the Philadelphia Eagles made significant changes to their coaching staff by bringing in Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on the Scoop City podcast, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman played a major role in these hires.

Following a string of losses towards the end of the season, there were doubts about head coach Nick Sirianni’s future with the team. However, after a meeting with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, Sirianni was given another chance and expressed willingness to make changes. This led to the hiring of Moore and Fangio to revamp the team’s offensive and defensive strategies.

One of the main criticisms of the Eagles’ offense last season was its lack of creativity and use of motion. Under former coordinator Brian Johnson, the team ranked last in the league in utilizing motion on plays. Moore, known for his innovative approach, frequently used motion during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers, which could bring a fresh perspective to the Eagles’ offense.

On the defensive side, the Eagles struggled with weak linebacker play and a decline in their secondary’s performance. With Fangio’s defensive scheme, which focuses on two-deep safeties and disguising coverages, the team aims to improve its overall defensive performance. Fangio’s strategy also involves minimal blitzing, relying instead on the front four to generate pressure on the quarterback.

The decision to hire Moore and Fangio signals a proactive approach by the Eagles to address the shortcomings of the previous season. Despite the challenges faced in 2023, the team still boasts talented players on both offense and defense. With the right coaching strategies in place, the Eagles could be strong contenders for a Super Bowl berth in the upcoming season.
