North Carolina Football Coach Mack Brown has announced that he will not be returning next season, as confirmed by Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham on Tuesday. Brown, 73, will continue to coach the team in the regular-season finale against NC State on Saturday, but it is uncertain whether he will lead the Tar Heels in their bowl game.
In a statement, Brown expressed his gratitude for his time at North Carolina, highlighting the memories and relationships he has built during his 16 seasons as head coach. He emphasized his focus on preparing the team for the upcoming game against N.C. State and ensuring the seniors are sent off in the best possible way.
During his tenure at North Carolina, Brown has achieved a combined record of 113-78-1 and led the team to six bowl berths, including an appearance in the ACC championship game in 2022. Cunningham praised Brown for his contributions to the football program and the university, acknowledging his record-breaking wins and the impact he has had on the team and players.
With Brown’s departure, North Carolina will begin the search for a new head coach, as Cunningham and Chancellor Lee H. Roberts plan to find a suitable replacement. Brown, who has three years remaining on his contract, will be paid the remainder of his salary by the UNC athletic department.
Despite facing challenges throughout the season, including a heartbreaking loss to Boston College, Brown remained committed to the team and expressed his intention to return for the next season. However, following discussions with Cunningham, it was decided that Brown would not continue as head coach beyond this season.
Brown’s coaching career spans 36 seasons, during which he has amassed an impressive record of 288-154-1. He began his coaching journey at Appalachian State before moving on to Tulane and eventually North Carolina. His success at Texas, where he won a national championship in 2005, solidified his reputation as a respected and accomplished coach.
As Brown transitions out of his role at North Carolina, his impact on the program and the players he mentored will be remembered fondly. The search for a new head coach marks a new chapter for the Tar Heels as they look to build on the foundation laid by Brown and continue their pursuit of excellence in college football.
