McLaren’s Norris Plays Key Role in Piastri’s Azerbaijan GP Victory

McLaren Formula 1 team boss Andrea Stella believes Lando Norris played a crucial role in Oscar Piastri’s victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Piastri, shadowing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the first stint of the race, found himself under pressure from Sergio Perez, who was attempting to undercut the McLaren driver by pitting early on lap 14.

Instead of reacting immediately to Perez’s pitstop, Piastri stayed out for two extra laps before making his own pitstop on lap 16. This decision put Piastri at risk of losing second place to the Red Bull driver. However, thanks to McLaren’s support for Norris in his title challenge against Max Verstappen, Norris inadvertently helped Piastri in Baku.

Starting from 15th place on harder tires, Norris had fallen a pitstop behind Perez and managed to hold off the Mexican driver for two laps after his pitstop, as instructed by his race engineer. This strategic move allowed Piastri to make his own pitstop and come out ahead of Perez, ultimately securing his position in the race.

Piastri’s quick in- and out-laps, combined with Norris’ efforts, helped him close the gap to Leclerc once the Ferrari driver pitted. On lap 20, Piastri made a daring move on the inside of Turn 1 to take the lead of the race, a position he would successfully defend to claim his second career win.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella credited Norris with playing a crucial part in Piastri’s victory, stating that without Norris’ help, Perez could have pitted and stayed ahead of Piastri, altering the race outcome significantly.

Stella emphasized the team’s approach to racing as one cohesive unit, highlighting the importance of drivers supporting each other for the benefit of the team as a whole. He commended Piastri’s skill and mental strength during the race, particularly noting his bold overtake on Leclerc in Turn 1.

Piastri’s win and Norris’ strong finish in fourth place propelled McLaren to the top of the constructors’ championship standings for the first time in a decade. Stella recognized this achievement as a significant milestone for the team, attributing it to the collective effort of everyone involved in McLaren’s success.

Despite the team’s triumph in Baku, McLaren faced a minor setback as some crew members were fined 5000 euros for heading towards parc ferme to celebrate before the end of the race, a penalty imposed by the stewards.

In conclusion, McLaren’s strategic teamwork and driver support were instrumental in securing Piastri’s victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The team’s commitment to working together and maximizing results ultimately paid off with a crucial win and a lead in the constructors’ championship standings. As McLaren continues to strive for success in the Formula 1 season, the unity and determination of the team remain key factors in their pursuit of victory.
