India’s Mohun Bagan Super Giants has decided not to travel to Iran to play against Tractor SC due to concerns about security issues in the region. The match was scheduled to take place in Tabriz, Iran as part of the Asian Champions League Two. The club has reached out to the Asian Football Confederation to reschedule the game for a later date. The AFC has stated that they will refer the matter to the appropriate committees for further discussion and updates will be provided in the future.
In other Asian Champions League Elite matches, Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia secured a 5-0 victory over Al-Shorta of Iraq. New signing Marcos Leonardo, brought in to cover for the injured Neymar, opened the scoring followed by Aleksandar Mitrovic. Salem Al-Dawsari, Nasser Al-Dawsari, and Mohamed Kanno all found the back of the net in the second half, solidifying Al-Hilal’s win.
Al-Gharafa of Qatar also emerged victorious with a 4-2 win over Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates. The Asian Champions League tournament has been revamped with 24 teams divided into two groups, west and east. The top eight teams from each group will advance to the round of 16.
In the eastern zone, Gwangju FC of South Korea clinched a 1-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale of Japan with Jasir Asani’s first-half penalty being the decider. Pohang Steelers, another South Korean team, bounced back from an initial loss to secure a 3-0 win against Shanghai Port. On the other hand, Shanghai Shenhua suffered a 3-0 defeat to Johor of Malaysia, and Buriram United of Thailand won 2-1 against Australia’s Central Coast Mariners.
