The Houston Roughnecks, part of the UFL, have announced a new General Manager. Will Lewis is taking over the position from Lionel Vital. The team had a tough season in 2024, finishing with a record of 1-9.
Vital has an extensive background in the NFL, having worked for various teams such as the Patriots, Ravens, Falcons, and Cowboys in different scouting and player personnel roles. He retired from the NFL in 2022 but came out of retirement to join the UFL last year.
On the other hand, Lewis transitioned from coaching to scouting in the 1990s. He has worked for teams like the Packers, Seahawks, and Chiefs in various scouting roles. He also has experience with the AAF’s Memphis Express and the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks and San Antonio Brahmas.
It’s unclear how decisions are made regarding General Managers in the UFL, especially when there is no head coach in place. The UFL operates as a single entity with no individual team owners. Despite the uncertainty, the decision was made to replace Vital with Lewis after a challenging season for the Roughnecks.
With only one win in 10 games, the change in leadership doesn’t come as a huge surprise. The team will be looking to turn things around under Lewis’s guidance and hopefully improve their performance in the upcoming season. Lewis’s experience and expertise in scouting and player personnel could bring a fresh perspective to the team and help them achieve better results on the field.
