The Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, which has been the orthopedic provider for the Philadelphia Eagles since 2004, has decided to end its partnership with the team. This decision was made to avoid potential future malpractice risks, according to a report by Becker’s Orthopedic Review. The split between the two parties comes after former Eagles captain Chris Maragos won a lawsuit against the practice, claiming medical negligence and being awarded $43.5 million.

Maragos, who played a crucial role as one of the Eagles’ top special teams players from 2014 to 2017, was forced to retire in 2019 due to a serious knee injury he sustained during the team’s 2017 Super Bowl season. A jury consisting of 12 individuals ruled in Maragos’ favor in February 2023. The lawsuit alleged that the doctors responsible for Maragos’ surgery and rehabilitation failed to address a meniscus issue and allowed him to engage in exercises that further harmed his knee. Notably, Dr. James Bradley, a well-known surgeon with ties to the NFL, was a key figure in the civil suit. Testimonies in support of Maragos were provided by former Eagles players, including Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles. As a result of the lawsuit, Rothman Orthopaedic Institute was found liable for $15.8 million in damages to Maragos.

Despite the legal battle and ongoing appeal process reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Rothman Orthopaedic Institute will no longer be working with the Philadelphia Eagles. It is worth noting, however, that some of the institute’s current surgeons are still listed on the official website of the football team.

The departure of Rothman Orthopaedic Institute from the Eagles’ medical team raises questions about the future of the team’s orthopedic care. Finding a new provider with a strong reputation and a commitment to player safety will be crucial for the Eagles as they navigate this transition. Additionally, the lawsuit brought by Chris Maragos sheds light on the importance of proper medical care and rehabilitation protocols for professional athletes, highlighting the potential consequences of negligence in this field.

Moving forward, both the Philadelphia Eagles and Rothman Orthopaedic Institute will need to focus on addressing the fallout from this legal dispute and ensuring that similar issues do not arise in the future. The well-being of the players should always be the top priority, and establishing a collaborative and trustworthy relationship between medical providers and sports organizations is essential for maintaining the health and performance of athletes.
