The current favorite to win the award is Alexandre Sarr, with odds of +350 at most sportsbooks. Many in the media, including FOX Sports’ John Fanta, have expressed doubts about Bronny’s readiness for the NBA. Fanta mentioned that Bronny should still be in college and questioned whether he is prepared to be a marquee player in the league.
Bronny’s college career at USC was impacted by a health scare, as he suffered a cardiac arrest in July 2023, causing him to miss the first month of the season. Despite this setback, he played in 25 games, averaging 19.4 minutes per contest, 4.8 points, and 2.1 assists per game.
The last player with long odds to win Rookie of the Year and actually achieve it was Malcolm Brogdon in 2017. Brogdon was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Bucks and went on to become the first second-round pick to win the award in over 50 years.
