Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov has been re-elected as the president of the International Fencing Federation, also known as FIE. He secured 120 votes for a majority during the congress in Uzbekistan, his birthplace. This marks his continuation in the role he first assumed in 2008. Usmanov’s financial support has been instrumental in the growth of fencing over the years.
Despite facing sanctions, Usmanov remains committed to the sport and its development. In response to the restrictions placed on him by the European Union following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he announced in March 2022 that he would temporarily step down from his duties as FIE president. In his absence, Greek official Emmanuel Katsiadakis served as the interim president.
During the recent congress, Usmanov expressed gratitude to his supporters and reiterated his dedication to ensuring a prosperous future for fencing. He emphasized that he is actively contesting the unjustified restrictions imposed on him through legal channels. Usmanov affirmed his unwavering commitment to acting in the best interests of the FIE, vowing to prevent any baseless limitations from affecting the federation and its operations.
By securing a fresh term as president, Usmanov has the opportunity to continue his work in advancing the sport of fencing on a global scale. His leadership and financial contributions have played a significant role in the growth and development of fencing, making him a pivotal figure within the FIE. Despite the challenges he faces, Usmanov remains determined to uphold the values and integrity of the federation, ensuring that it remains a beacon of excellence in the world of fencing.
