Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, a former NBA player and the father of the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant, has passed away at the age of 69. The La Salle men’s basketball program shared the sad news on social media, remembering Joe Bryant as a beloved member of their community. Bryant had recently suffered a massive stroke, according to La Salle coach Fran Dunphy.
While many may know Joe Bryant as Kobe’s father, he had a successful NBA career of his own, spanning eight seasons in the league. Drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1975, Bryant played for teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers, and Houston Rockets, averaging 8.7 points per game during his time in the NBA. After a strong period from 1980-83, Bryant took his talents overseas to Italy for nine seasons before finishing his professional career with a French team.
Following his retirement, Joe Bryant and his family relocated to the Philadelphia area, where Kobe Bryant emerged as a standout high school player at Lower Merion High School. Their relationship faced challenges during Kobe’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Joe Bryant’s passing comes after the tragic helicopter crash that took the life of his son, Kobe, along with eight others, including Kobe’s daughter, Gianna, 4 ½ years ago.
In addition to his playing career, Joe Bryant also had a successful coaching career spanning over 20 years. He notably coached the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks from 2005-07 and had an interim coaching stint in 2011. Joe and his wife, Pam, were parents to two daughters, Sharia and Shaya.
Joe “Jellybean” Bryant’s legacy extends beyond being Kobe Bryant’s father. He was a talented basketball player, a dedicated coach, and a beloved member of the basketball community. His impact on the sport and the lives he touched will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
