Other notable figures in attendance included Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred, executive and former manager and player Joe Torre, Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley, Rickey Henderson, Reggie Jackson, and Juan Marichal, as well as retired managers Dusty Baker and Felipe Alou. Former Giants owner Bob Lurie, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, former Mayor Willie Brown, and retired longtime National Baseball Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson were also present.
During the ceremony, Dusty Baker shared a heartwarming Willie Mays story, while Barry Bonds expressed gratitude for a gift he received from Mays. Mays’ son, Michael, touched the audience with his words, emphasizing the importance of playing for the team’s unsung heroes.
Former President Bill Clinton highlighted Mays’ legacy, stating, “The effort is the prize,” underscoring Mays’ dedication and work ethic throughout his illustrious career. Mays, known as the consummate five-tool player, is often regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
In addition to his on-field achievements, Mays also served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. The Army paid tribute to Mays during the ceremony, recognizing his service to the country.
Mays’ impressive baseball resume includes two MVP awards, 24 All-Star selections, and 12 Gold Glove Awards. He led the Giants to a World Series title in 1954 and ranks sixth all-time in career home runs with 660. Furthermore, Mays is one of only eight players to have scored 2,000 or more runs in Major League Baseball history.
The Celebration of Life event not only honored Willie Mays’ remarkable accomplishments on the baseball diamond but also celebrated his character, integrity, and lasting impact on the sport and those around him. Willie Mays’ legacy will continue to inspire future generations of baseball players and fans alike.
