Noah Lyles secured his spot at the Paris Games by winning the men’s 100-meter event at the U.S. Olympic track & field trials in Eugene, Ore. He clocked in at 9.83, outpacing Kenny Bednarek (9.87) and Fred Kerley (9.88). This will be Lyles’ second time competing in the Olympics, having won a bronze medal in the men’s 200m at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
Kendall Ellis also earned her ticket to the Olympics by winning the women’s 400m event with a time of 49.46. She beat out Aaliyah Butler (49.71) and Alexis Holmes (49.78). Ellis previously won gold in the 4x400m women’s relay and a bronze in the 4x400m mixed relay at the Tokyo Olympics.
In addition to Lyles and Ellis, several other athletes secured victories at the trials. Chris McDonald won the men’s masters 800m with a time of 2:14.25, while Sue McDonald led the women’s race with a time of 2:22.81. Kenneth Rooks triumphed in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:21.92.
Curtis Thompson emerged victorious in the men’s javelin throw with a toss of 83.04 meters, and Sam Kendricks claimed the men’s pole vault title with a jump of 5.92 meters. Annette Echikunwoke took first place in the women’s hammer throw with a heave of 74.68 meters.
