PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan spoke at the Honoree Ceremony for the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. He mentioned that discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) regarding potential unification in professional golf are progressing positively. Monahan emphasized that while he understands the public’s curiosity, negotiations will not be conducted publicly.
He shared details about a recent meeting in New York where the PGA Tour’s transaction committee, including Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, along with Rory McIlroy via phone, engaged in productive discussions with PIF representatives. Monahan highlighted the ongoing dialogue between the PGA Tour and PIF, mentioning his participation in a call with them earlier that day.
Despite the rumors and misconceptions surrounding the discussions, Monahan assured that the parties involved are focused on reaching a beneficial agreement for players, fans, and the sport of golf. He acknowledged the attention and speculation but reiterated the commitment to achieving the right outcome.
In addition to the talks with PIF, Monahan praised the success of Signature Events and announced that the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., will continue to be a Signature Event in 2025. This event has been a longstanding partnership, with an agreement in place through 2030.
The PIF’s involvement in funding LIV Golf, which has attracted top players with lucrative contracts and tournament prizes, adds another dimension to the evolving landscape of professional golf. Despite the competitive nature of the sport, Monahan remains optimistic about finding common ground with PIF and ensuring the best interests of all stakeholders are met.
