The Pittsburgh Steelers could have a battle on their hands for the No. 2 wide receiver job after trading away George Pickens. There’s one out of the box possibility that could factor into the picture. Fansided’s DJ Dunson wants the Steelers to sign a wideout who hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2020, when he was a Steeler. That’s DJ Cain, who right now is leading the UFL in receiving. “If the Steelers are going to have a free-for-all to be the WR2, he may as well open it up for the UFL’s best receiver,” Dunson writes. “Cain, 28, is still in his athletic prime, stands at 6-foot-2, and is built like a tank. However, talent is not how he fell out of the league before.”… In his first training camp, Cain tore his ACL, then fell out of favor with the Colts during his second year. Cain isn’t going to light it up, but given the depths they went to a year ago in search of receiver help, he’s an option worth exploring. Ironically, Cain is also a former teammate of Mike Williams whose stint in Pittsburgh last year started with a splash and ended with a whimper.

Cain made nine catches across his two healthy NFL seasons spread across the Colts and Steelers. He’d definitely be a surprise to win a job if he signed, but he certainly seems to have grown as a receiver since his last time in the NFL. And at this point, the possibly Aaron Rodgers-led offense could use all the pass catching help it can get. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like the Steelers could really use some fresh blood in their receiving corps after trading away George Pickens. And one interesting option that DJ Dunson is suggesting is DJ Cain, who has been tearing it up in the UFL. Now, Cain hasn’t seen any NFL action since 2020 when he was with the Steelers, but he’s showing some serious potential in the UFL. Standing at 6-foot-2 and built like a tank, Cain might just be the injection of talent that the Steelers need at the wide receiver position. Not really sure why this matters, but Cain did have a rough start in the league with an ACL tear in his first training camp and falling out of favor with the Colts in his second year. But hey, if the Steelers were willing to go to great lengths last year to find receiver help, maybe Cain is worth a shot.

It’s no secret that the Steelers are looking for someone to step up and take on the WR2 role, especially with the departure of George Pickens. DJ Cain may not have lit up the NFL in his previous stints with the Colts and Steelers, but he’s been showing promise in the UFL. With only nine catches to his name in the NFL, it would definitely be a surprise if he managed to secure a spot on the roster. However, given the struggles the Steelers faced last year in the receiving department, maybe Cain is worth considering. Plus, with the possibility of an Aaron Rodgers-led offense, the Steelers could use all the help they can get in the passing game. Not really sure why this matters, but it’s interesting to see how Cain has evolved as a receiver since his last NFL appearance. Maybe he’s grown into a more polished player who could make a difference for the team.
