When I was listening in on Ausar Thompson being asked about guarding Jalen Brunson after the Detroit Pistons’ loss to the New York Knicks in Game 1, it seemed like he was a bit taken aback. Thompson had been tasked with defending Brunson from the start of the series and despite Brunson’s strong performance in the first game, Thompson confidently replied, “None.”
Thompson’s bold response was a reflection of his play on both ends of the court during the Pistons’ 106-103 victory over the Knicks in Game 5. He put up a season-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked two shots. It was a standout performance for the 22-year-old wing, showcasing his athleticism and decisiveness in a crucial playoff game.
If the Pistons want to have a shot at forcing a Game 7, Thompson will need to replicate his Game 5 performance in Game 6. Despite only making half of his attempts, his 12 free-throw shots were a career high, demonstrating the pressure he put on the Knicks’ defense.
Tobias Harris praised Thompson’s contribution, stating, “He was the X-factor for us tonight in getting going and playing great.” Harris highlighted Thompson’s humility and work ethic, emphasizing how he is always looking to improve his game.
Thompson’s defensive efforts against Brunson in Game 5 were particularly impressive, holding the guard to 16 points on 4-of-16 shooting. Brunson struggled to find his rhythm against Thompson’s defensive prowess, shooting just 1-of-8 when directly guarded by him.
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff commended Thompson’s defensive performance, stating, “He was phenomenal defensively tonight.” Thompson’s defensive impact set the tone for the game and allowed the Pistons to secure a crucial win.
Offensively, Thompson excelled at finding opportunities near the rim, with seven of his eight field goals coming from dunks. His ability to move without the ball and capitalize on open spaces in the defense was a key factor in his scoring success.
Thompson credited his teammates, particularly Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, for setting him up for scoring opportunities. Cunningham and Duren provided assists that allowed Thompson to capitalize on his strengths near the basket.
With the series now at 3-2 in favor of the Knicks, the Pistons are heading back home for Game 6 with momentum on their side. Thompson expressed his eagerness to deliver a win for the fans in Detroit, acknowledging the support they have received throughout the series.
As the Pistons look to extend the series and force a decisive Game 7, Thompson’s performance will be crucial. His ability to impact the game on both ends of the court will be instrumental in determining the outcome of the series.
