Filipino Crew Makes Waves in Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
In a historic moment for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, an all-Filipino crew of 15 sailors is set to make waves as the annual ocean classic kicks off in Sydney on Thursday. Led by veteran sailor Ernesto Echauz, the crew of Centennial 7 will embark on the challenging 628-nautical mile journey, adding another “first” to the race’s storied history.
From Dream to Reality
The crew of Centennial 7 hails from the Philippines’ national team and the Philippines navy, bringing a wealth of experience and skill to the race. The TP52 yacht, now known as Centennial 7, previously sailed as Celestial and clinched the overall handicap victory in 2022 under Sam Haynes. When logistical challenges threatened to derail their participation, Haynes stepped in and sold the boat to Echauz, ensuring that the Filipino crew’s dream of racing in the Sydney to Hobart would become a reality.
A Dream Come True
Reflecting on the journey to the race, Echauz expressed his gratitude and excitement, stating, “It’s a dream come true for all of us. We never expected that we’ll be able to join.” With the support of their fellow sailors and the sailing community, the crew of Centennial 7 is ready to take on the challenge and showcase their skills on an international stage.
Setting Sail for Success
As they prepare to navigate the treacherous waters of the Bass Strait and make their way to Tasmania, the crew of Centennial 7 is focused on finishing the race strong. With a track record of success in previous races and a deep bond forged through years of sailing together, Echauz and his team are determined to make their mark in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the all-Filipino crew as they embark on this historic journey, representing their country with pride and determination.
