Prosecutor Kym Worthy emphasized that the decision not to press charges was made based on the facts of the case and the law, regardless of Williams’ status as an NFL player. During the traffic stop, Williams was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his brother when they were pulled over for driving over the speed limit and in an unsafe manner. The police officers discovered two guns in the vehicle, with one belonging to Williams’ brother, who had a concealed pistol license. The other gun, registered to Williams, did not have a concealed pistol license, but he was found to be qualified to obtain one.
Despite being handcuffed and briefly detained, Williams was later released at the scene when a Detroit Police Department supervisor arrived. The brother who was driving the car received traffic citations, but no charges were issued against Williams. The prosecutor’s office stressed the need for clarity in the law regarding concealed weapons and urged the legislature to provide guidance for future cases.
Williams, who was drafted by the Lions in 2022, has had a successful season despite facing challenges, including sitting out two games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
