Pete Alonso is gearing up for his fifth consecutive appearance in the Home Run Derby, looking to secure his third victory. The New York Mets’ first baseman will be facing off against Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson and Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm in the competition scheduled for July 15 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Alonso took to Instagram to announce his participation in the event, joining the ranks of legendary players like Ken Griffey Jr., who is the only three-time champion of the derby, having clinched the title in 1994, 1998, and 1999.

In 2019, as a rookie, Alonso emerged victorious at Cleveland’s Progressive Field, narrowly defeating Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero with a final score of 23-22. He went on to defend his title in 2021 at Denver’s Coors Field, where he once again triumphed over Baltimore’s Trey Mancini with the same scoreline. The 2020 edition of the derby was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Alonso faced a setback in the 2022 semifinals at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where he was eliminated by Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez. The eventual champion was Juan Soto, who was representing Washington at the time.

Last year, at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park, Alonso was defeated by Rodríguez with a score of 41-21. It was Guerrero who claimed the title, making history by becoming the second father-son duo, alongside Vladimir Sr. in 2007, to win the Home Run Derby.

The stage is set for an exciting showdown among these power-hitters, as they look to showcase their skills and claim the coveted title. Baseball fans can expect a thrilling competition filled with adrenaline-pumping moments and jaw-dropping displays of power hitting.
